Based on the early date, I'd say that perhaps they just spelled the name differently. My grandfather's last name was spelled Gambal, but his brother was Gamble (because that's how his teachers spelled it in school).
The two people on this stone were married. I've seen an obituary with brothers with the last name Wolf/Wolfe, but a wife taking a husband's name, well, you'd THINK she'd somehow choose to spell it the same.
