is really complicated*.

*Don't even get me started on commas.

  1. In German, all nouns are capitalized - Father and Husband, for instance. A lot of Germans who learned to speak English as a second language continue to use upper case for nouns from force of habit. Since this person was born in 1830, it is possible he was born in the Old Country.
